Industry — printed packaging and tagging

Packaging and tag printing for Garments & Apparel

Garment export packaging is high volume, size-broken and deadline-driven. Fotoset prints swing tags, sewn labels, care labels and packing stickers to the size breakdown the order requires.

Fotoset produces this work from one plant in Kolkata, with photography, design and artwork, colour scanning, offset printing, lamination and silkscreen printing in-house. One vendor covers the printed matter for the whole consignment, from the sewn label inside the product to the mark on the master carton.

Packaging and tagging requirements in this sector

  • Swing tags in the buyer's format, punched and strung or fitted with a loop lock
  • Sewn satin and taffeta labels for neck, side seam and pocket positions
  • Care and composition labels in the languages the destination requires
  • Size stickers and cube stickers for polybags and inner cartons
  • Price tickets and barcode labels, often with variable data
  • Carton labels carrying the assortment and ratio breakdown

How the work is produced

Garment printed matter is defined by the size break. A single purchase order may need eleven sizes, four colours and three destination markets, each with its own sticker and ticket. Fotoset prints, counts, bands and marks each size separately so the packing line can pick without sorting.

Care symbols are a frequent artwork problem. Supplied as a raster image, the ISO 3758 symbols print filled or broken and the wash instruction becomes ambiguous. Fotoset requests vector symbol sets and reproduces them at a size that survives printing on satin.

Swing tags for apparel usually carry the highest finishing expectation on the site: soft-touch lamination, foil, emboss and a bespoke die shape are all common. All of that is done in-house.

Regulatory and compliance marks that appear on this printed matter

Fotoset prints the marks the customer supplies and does not alter them. Where a mark arrives as a low-resolution raster image it is queried in writing before plate-making, because a soft or broken standard mark is a compliance problem, not a print preference.

  • Fibre composition declaration in the required languages
  • Care symbols to the ISO 3758 set, reproduced as vector
  • Country of origin marking
  • Importer identification for European and UK retail
  • Recycling and packaging waste marks

Languages typically required

Care and composition text is commonly supplied in five to twelve European languages. Indian domestic supply adds Hindi and Bengali.

Multi-language versions are set from the text you supply, proofed separately, and packed and marked by version so the packing line cannot mix them.

Seasonal ordering patterns

  • Orders peak ahead of European autumn and spring deliveries, with tight windows either side
  • Size and colour assortment changes generate late repeat runs of stickers and tickets
  • Festive and gifting seasons in India create short high-volume runs

Stock notes

Swing tags are usually 300 to 350 GSM art or kraft board; sewn labels are satin, taffeta or coated polyester.
