Industry — printed packaging and tagging

Packaging and tag printing for Food & FMCG

Food and FMCG packaging carries a mandatory declaration set and a fixed panel layout. Fotoset prints cartons, labels and sleeves to that discipline.

Fotoset produces this work from one plant in Kolkata, with photography, design and artwork, colour scanning, offset printing, lamination and silkscreen printing in-house. One vendor covers the printed matter for the whole consignment, from the sewn label inside the product to the mark on the master carton.

Packaging and tagging requirements in this sector

  • Printed folding cartons for packet, sachet and bottle ranges
  • Wrap-around and front-and-back labels with clear panel separation
  • Sleeves and banding for multipacks
  • Barcode and weight labels for retail units
  • Master carton printing with shipping marks and quantity per carton

How the work is produced

Food packaging artwork is dense with legally required text at small point sizes. Fotoset holds fine reversed text as far as the process allows and will advise where a reversed six-point line will fill in on a coated board, rather than print it and hope.

Coding areas matter. If the best-before field is placed over a laminated gloss panel the packer's coder smears. Fotoset asks for the coding position at artwork stage and leaves the panel uncoated.

For multipack sleeves and banding, the printed sheet is die-cut and glued so it slides over the pack without splitting at the crease. Board grain direction is set for that.

Regulatory and compliance marks that appear on this printed matter

Fotoset prints the marks the customer supplies and does not alter them. Where a mark arrives as a low-resolution raster image it is queried in writing before plate-making, because a soft or broken standard mark is a compliance problem, not a print preference.

  • FSSAI licence number and the mandatory Indian food declaration set
  • Nutrition panel, ingredient list and allergen declaration
  • Green and brown vegetarian and non-vegetarian marks
  • Net quantity declaration in metric units, in the legal metrology format
  • Best-before, batch and manufacture date fields left clear for coding
  • Recycling marks and food-contact suitability for the coating specified

Languages typically required

English plus Hindi is the common Indian requirement, with regional scripts added for state distribution. Export packs carry the destination market language.

Multi-language versions are set from the text you supply, proofed separately, and packed and marked by version so the packing line cannot mix them.

Seasonal ordering patterns

  • Festive and gifting ranges generate concentrated carton runs before the autumn season
  • New product launches create short first runs followed by larger repeats
  • Promotional overprints and flash panels arrive at short notice

Stock notes

Cartons are usually 250 to 350 GSM board with a food-suitable coating; labels are semi-gloss paper or film.
