Printing and packaging — Kolkata, since 1983
Satin & Polyester Labels for Leather Goods
Buyers sourcing leather goods from India specify satin and polyester labels as part of the pack, and then expect it to match the last run exactly. Fotoset holds artwork, plates, proofs and press records so a repeat prints to the previous standard. All production is in-house in Kolkata.
How this item is used on the line
Fotoset has been printing since 1983 and is run by Santanu Roy. Work for leather goods is a standing part of the plant's output, and satin and polyester labels is produced as a repeat item rather than a one-off. That matters when the second and third runs have to sit next to the first without a visible difference.
In leather goods, satin and polyester labels is used for work of this kind:
- Size and standard labels sewn into glove cuffs and gauntlets
- Neck and side-seam labels in workwear and garments
- Care and composition labels in multiple languages
- Batch, lot and date-of-manufacture labels for traceability
In this sector the printed set around the product usually includes the following, and Fotoset can supply all of it on one order rather than leaving the buyer to co-ordinate three suppliers:
- Hang tags on kraft or uncoated board, often die-cut to a leather or shield shape
- Swatch and material cards stating hide, tannage and finish
- Care and conditioning sheets packed with the product
- Rigid and folding boxes for gift and retail presentation
What we normally run
Size and format range: From 10 x 20 mm size flags to 100 x 150 mm multi-language care labels. Supplied cut, end-folded, centre-folded, mitre-folded or in continuous roll. Kraft board 300 to 350 GSM is common, unlaminated, so the tag has the same matt hand as the leather.
Printing is by sheet-fed offset for process and spot colours, with silkscreen used where an opaque white, a metallic or a fluorescent is specified. Both processes are in the same building, so a combination job runs without moving the sheet.
- Screen and thermal-transfer printing with wash and abrasion resistant inks
- Ultrasonic and hot-knife cutting to seal the edge against fraying
- Ink and substrate selected against the wash or wear cycle stated by the buyer
What the material has to survive
- Polyester satin in soft and standard finish, 0.10 to 0.20 mm
- Taffeta for firm, low-cost interior labels
- Coated polyester film label stock for high-abrasion positions
- Non-woven and Tyvek-type stock where a tear-resistant sewn label is specified
Every finishing operation this item needs happens in-house: lamination, coating, die-cutting, creasing, punching, eyeletting and packing. Sheets are not sent out between operations, which removes the most common cause of delay and of damage on a satin and polyester labels job.
- Straight cut, end fold, centre fold, mitre fold and loop fold
- Roll or bundled pack presentation for the sewing line
- Sequential size runs packed and marked by size for direct issue to production
Compliance and labelling considerations
Fotoset prints the marks and declarations supplied by the customer and does not alter them. Artwork is checked before plate-making and any mark that will not reproduce cleanly is queried in writing. For leather goods, the content that commonly appears on this item includes:
- Material declaration distinguishing genuine leather from split, bonded and coated finishes
- Country of origin marking
- CE marking where the item is classified as protective equipment
- REACH-related declarations supplied by the customer and printed as given
- Recycling marks on the packaging

Questions we are asked
Frequently asked
- Can you match a run printed for us in an earlier season?
- Yes. Send a physical sample of the earlier run with the order. Artwork, proofs and press records are retained, and the reprint is checked against the sample before the run is released, not after.
- Can the goods be delivered to our packing supplier rather than to us?
- Yes. Overseas brands frequently specify Fotoset directly and have the printed matter delivered to the nominated Indian manufacturer for packing. Delivery address, carton marking and required count per carton are set on the purchase order.
- Do you handle seasonal peaks and repeat runs for leather goods?
- Yes. Repeat and seasonal work is the normal pattern of the plant. Give Fotoset the forecast for the season and the schedule is planned against it rather than treated as a series of unrelated orders.
