Instruction Sheets, Manuals & User Information Leaflets for Footwear
In footwear, instruction sheets and manuals is rarely a decorative item. It carries the information a buyer, an inspector or a warehouse system needs, and it has to carry it identically on every reprint. Fotoset has produced printed matter of this kind from Kolkata since 1983, with photography, artwork, colour scanning, offset printing, lamination and silkscreen printing all in-house.
The job the print has to do
Single-vendor production is the practical reason exporters in footwear use Fotoset. Nothing is sub-contracted out for lamination or screen work, so the sheet does not travel, the schedule does not slip against another factory's queue, and one plant is accountable for the finished instruction sheets and manuals.
In footwear, instruction sheets and manuals is used for work of this kind:
- User information leaflets packed with gloves, footwear and other protective equipment
- Multi-language instruction sheets for European distribution
- Warranty cards and care sheets inserted into shoe boxes and garment packs
- Assembly and use manuals for tools and hardware
In this sector the printed set around the product usually includes the following, and Fotoset can supply all of it on one order rather than leaving the buyer to co-ordinate three suppliers:
- Printed shoe boxes and inner cartons, with size and article marking on the end panel
- Swing tags attached to the pair, carrying material, size and standard information
- Insole and sock prints carrying the brand and size
- Leather-shape swatch tags stating the upper and lining material
Stock, size and format
Size and format range: Flat sheets from A7 to A2, folded down to as small as 40 x 55 mm. Booklets from 8 to 96 pages, saddle-stitched. Boxes are usually litho-laminated E or B flute for transit strength, with 250 to 300 GSM printed faces.
Printing is by sheet-fed offset for process and spot colours, with silkscreen used where an opaque white, a metallic or a fluorescent is specified. Both processes are in the same building, so a combination job runs without moving the sheet.
- Sheet-fed offset, one to four colours, with fine text held at small point sizes
- Typesetting checked against the customer's supplied translation files before plate-making
- Pictograms and standard marks reproduced as vector, never rescaled from raster images
Choosing the substrate
- Maplitho and offset paper 60, 70, 80 and 90 GSM for folded leaflets
- Coated art paper 90 to 150 GSM for booklets with images
- Bible and lightweight papers where a high page count must fit a small pack
Finishing is carried out on the same site as printing. That includes film lamination in gloss, matt and soft-touch, spot UV, foil blocking, embossing, die-cutting, creasing, punching and eyeletting, so a instruction sheets and manuals order leaves as a finished item rather than as printed sheets.
- Cross, roll, concertina, gate and map folding to eight or more panels
- Saddle stitching and side stitching
- Guillotining to a stated finished size with square-cut edges
- Counting, banding and bulk packing for the packing line
Regulatory content on this item
Fotoset prints the marks and declarations supplied by the customer and does not alter them. Artwork is checked before plate-making and any mark that will not reproduce cleanly is queried in writing. For footwear, the content that commonly appears on this item includes:
- CE marking and EN ISO 20345 or EN ISO 20347 references on safety footwear
- Material pictograms for upper, lining, insole and outsole
- BIS licence marking for footwear sold in India
- Country of origin marking on the box and the carton
- Recycling marks and paper-stream instructions on the packaging
Languages
English is standard on the box; European retail commonly adds German, French, Spanish and Italian on the care sheet. Indian domestic supply adds Hindi and Bengali.
Ordering pattern
- Orders concentrate ahead of European spring and autumn ranges
- Safety footwear runs follow industrial procurement cycles and repeat through the year
- Size-set changes mid-season create short repeat runs of end-panel labels
Artwork and pre-press
- Press-ready PDF, version 1.4 or later, with 3 mm bleed on all four sides and crop marks outside the trim.
- Native Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW files accepted, with fonts converted to outlines and linked images embedded.
- Images at 300 dpi at final printed size. Line art and barcode artwork supplied as vector wherever possible.
- Colour built in CMYK. Spot colours called out by Pantone reference in the file and in the purchase order.

Questions we are asked
Frequently asked
- What do you need from us to start?
- The finished size, the stock or an equivalent sample, the number of colours, the finishing required, the quantity, the delivery date and the delivery point. Artwork can follow once the specification is agreed.
- Do you set the footwear text and pictograms, or do we supply them?
- Either. If you supply press-ready files they are printed as given, after a pre-press check. If you supply text and vector marks, Fotoset sets the layout in-house and sends a proof for written approval before plate-making.
- How do you keep colour consistent between reprints?
- Brand colours are run as spot colours where the tolerance is tight, ink density is recorded at the press, and a retained sample from the approved run is used as the reference for the next one. Proofs are made on the production stock.
